Backup

Back up your PC and your Prophetix applications, locally or to another machine, with sealed versions whose hash verifies that they have not changed.

In preparationCreate an account

Backup installs on your device (Windows) and opens with your Prophetix account, the same one as for the web applications.

Backup stores your backups in compressed archives (Brotli, GZip or Zstandard) in which every file is identified by its SHA-256 hash. Each backup is a version: once written, it is sealed (write-protected) and its hash is recalculated to check that it has not changed; any version can be restored. This protection is the one provided by the file system: an administrator of the PC can still lift it, and the archives are not encrypted.

You describe what to back up in profiles, which you start by hand or schedule (cron-style schedules). The Prophetix applications installed on the PC are found automatically, with their data. A backup can be sent to another Backup machine on the network, which receives it after checking an access token; the transfer is not encrypted yet: use it only on a trusted network.

An audit log keeps a record of every backup, restore and transfer.

Backup is in preparation. It will join the Prophetix subscription catalogue when it is released.

Every feature of Backup

47 features in 9 areas

Backup profiles

  • Creates profiles that describe a backup: a name, a description and a color to recognize them.
  • Chooses the profile type: full PC, selected folders, Prophetix applications or mixed.
  • Chooses the archive compression: none, GZip, Brotli (recommended) or Zstandard.
  • Sets the retention period in days and the maximum number of versions to keep.
  • Edits or deletes a profile, and shows the profiles as cards.
  • Provides two sample profiles at first launch: Documents, and the Prophetix applications.

Schedules

  • Attaches one or more schedules to each profile, which can be switched on and off.
  • Offers the rhythms once, hourly, daily, weekly and monthly, with the hour and the minute.
  • Accepts a cron-style expression for custom schedules.
  • Provides two sample schedules: every day at 10 p.m. and Sunday at 3 a.m.
  • Shows the last run of each schedule.

Storage and versions

  • Lists the versions kept for each profile, with their date, their number of files and their size.
  • Shows each version's SHA-256 hash and whether it is sealed or not.
  • Totals the number of versions and the space used.
  • Deletes a version you no longer need.

Dashboard

  • Shows the last backup and the next scheduled one.
  • Counts the profiles, the stored versions and the space used.
  • Compares recent successful and failed backups.
  • Details the recent runs: date, profile, duration, files, size and compressed size.
  • Can be reopened at any time with the F5 key.

Network

  • Prepares the PC to receive backups from other machines: activation, listening port (9850 by default) and storage folder.
  • Can require authentication for the uploads it receives.
  • Keeps the list of target machines: name, host, port, access token, active state and last connection.
  • Adds, edits or deletes a target.

Audit log

  • Keeps a record of events with their date, level (info, warning, error, critical), category and message.
  • Sorts events by category: backup, restore, compression, network, scheduling, storage and system.
  • Filters the log by minimum level and by category, then clears the filters.
  • Cleans up entries older than 90 days in one click.

On your devices

  • Runs on Windows, with a collapsible side menu and an F1 shortcut to the settings.
  • Keeps profiles, schedules, versions and log in a local SQLite database on the PC.
  • Signs in with your Prophetix account, which carries the license.
  • Signals that a new version is available.

Good to know

  • Today the application lets you prepare and consult: it does not start a backup yet and restores nothing.
  • The backup engine is written, but it is not yet connected to the screens: dashboard, storage and log stay empty as long as no backup is recorded.
  • The sources of a profile (folders, files, applications) cannot yet be chosen in the profiles screen.
  • The archives are not encrypted and neither is the planned transfer between machines: use it only on a trusted network.
  • The planned sealing is the write protection of the file system: an administrator of the PC can lift it.
  • The general settings (default folder, start with Windows, notification area) are not saved yet.

Planned (not available yet)

  • Start a backup by hand from a profile, with progress: files, size, speed and remaining time.
  • Run the schedules at the scheduled time, with cron-style schedules.
  • Archive the files with the chosen compression, one SHA-256 hash per file and a manifest, the engine being written.
  • Seal each version as read-only, verify its hash and apply retention, always keeping the most recent one.
  • Restore a whole version or a selection of files.
  • Send a backup to another machine on the network, which receives it under a token and stores it as read-only.
  • Find the installed Prophetix applications with their databases and data folders.
  • Choose the sources of each profile, including folders and files.
  • Encrypt the archives and the transfer.
