Remote

See a computer's screen and control it remotely, with the consent of the person in front of it.

Remote lets you help a relative or a colleague without traveling. There are two ways to proceed: in family mode, the helper signs in with their Prophetix account, sees the computers registered by the members of their organization and selects one; the person in front of the screen accepts, and a takeover password is checked on both sides. In code mode, the computer to be fixed displays an ID and a password, which the helper enters on the web page, without an account.

The screen and the input travel over a channel encrypted end to end: the relay server only sees bytes. The diagnostic tools of the former Troubleshoot product (network, sound, printers, startup) are now the "Diagnostics" tab of the Windows agent.

Controlling the mouse and keyboard on a real desktop has not yet been proven, the agent exists only for Windows, there is only one screen and no file transfer.

Every feature of Remote

63 features in 12 areas

Takeover with consent

  • Shows a computer's screen and controls its mouse and keyboard, to help a relative or a colleague without traveling.
  • Asks the person in front of the screen to accept each request, through a dialog box on their computer.
  • Displays a red banner, always in the foreground, with an "End" button, as long as someone is controlling the computer.
  • Lets the person in front of the screen end the session at any time.
  • The server relays the request, but it is the controlled computer that decides whether to accept.

Family mode

  • The helper signs in with their Prophetix account, without installing anything.
  • They see their own computers and those that members of their organization have shared with them.
  • Each computer shows whether it is online or offline.
  • It indicates when someone is already controlling a computer.
  • When adding a computer, chooses whether or not to share it with the organization.
  • A computer is removed from the list with one click, and can be registered again if needed.

Code mode

  • A computer to be fixed displays a nine-digit ID and a randomly generated password.
  • The helper enters them on the web page, without an account.
  • The ID and the password can be used only once.
  • Ten unknown IDs within ten minutes from the same address slow down the following attempts.
  • A wrong password ends the session and burns the code.

Takeover password

  • Each side proves to the other that it knows the password, without ever sending it.
  • The takeover password of a computer is chosen by its owner (at least ten characters).
  • It stays on the computer, protected by Windows, and the server never sees it.
  • Three failures in a row suspend requests for five minutes.
  • If the passwords differ, nothing of the session is readable.

Privacy and logs

  • The screen and the input travel over a channel encrypted end to end: the relay only passes bytes.
  • The relay logs who connected to which computer, from which address and for how long, never the content.
  • The agent keeps a local log that the person can read: requests, sessions opened and ended, passwords refused.
  • The browsers of other sites cannot use a person's connection.
  • Subjects the helper's connection to the organization's subscription; a session closed on the account side no longer allows a new takeover, but a session already open runs to its end.

Helper's web console

  • Works in the browser of a computer, phone or tablet, without installation.
  • Displays the screen of the controlled computer and sends it the mouse (movement, clicks, wheel) and the keyboard.
  • Adds a computer by obtaining a single-use ticket, valid for ten minutes.

Windows agent

  • Starts on the computer to be fixed and captures the main screen.
  • Offers "Get help (by code)": an ID and a password displayed, valid once.
  • Registers the computer for the family or the organization from a server address and a ticket, under a name of your choice.
  • Becomes reachable or disappears with a button; "Forget this computer" removes it.
  • Offers unattended access, unchecked by default, with an explicit confirmation; the password is still required.
  • Minimizes to the taskbar, and can open minimized (--minimized option).

Diagnostics: simple mode

  • Asks the question "What problem are you having?" and offers eight cases: Internet, sound, printer, slow computer, screen, microphone, frozen program, USB.
  • Offers a "Check everything" button for a quick check.
  • Shows the result with advice.

Diagnostics: expert mode

  • Audio: default volume and device for output and input, microphone level, volume per application.
  • Network: adapters, IP addresses, gateway, speed; DNS cache flush, IP renewal, ping.
  • Performance: memory by process group with a visual map, C: drive, and management of programs launched at startup.
  • Display: detected screens and resolution change.
  • Group policies: list of those that apply, opening of the editor, refresh with gpupdate.
  • Printers: status, queues, clearing one queue or all of them, spooler restart, test page, emergency stop.
  • Tools: access by category to the built-in Windows tools, with a search.
  • Stress tests: processor, memory, graphics card and disk, with live measurements and an exportable report.
  • Presets: saves and reapplies an audio and display configuration.

Command-line automation

  • Applies a settings profile: performance, gaming, privacy, balanced or workstation.
  • Disables lists of Windows services: superfluous, telemetry, unnecessary.
  • Enables performance optimizations, cleans temporary files and optimizes startup.
  • Exports the configuration as JSON and imports it on other machines.
  • Creates a Start menu shortcut for a profile.
  • Runs in silent mode with automatic closing, log and exit code for scripts and deployment by group policy.

Good to know

  • Controlling the mouse and keyboard on a real desktop has not yet been proven in real conditions.
  • The agent exists only for Windows; the web console works in any browser.
  • A single screen, with no clipboard or file transfer.
  • Windows launched as administrator and the lock screen cannot be controlled.
  • The relay does not see the screen, but it keeps the history of connections (who, which computer, duration).
  • A session in progress does not survive the shutdown of the server that carries it.
  • The diagnostic tools have not been replayed one by one since their merge into Remote.

Planned (not available yet)

  • Android application, as a controlled computer and as a helper.
  • Publication in the Microsoft Store.
  • Consultation by a computer's owner of the session history.
