OfficeCalc
A spreadsheet that opens and saves your Excel workbooks, formulas and macros included.
OfficeCalc installs on your device (Windows) and opens with your Prophetix account, the same one as for the web applications.
OfficeCalc reads and writes XLSX and XLSM workbooks. Its engine calculates formulas the way Excel does, handles pivot tables and runs the VBA macros contained in your workbooks, in an interpreter that does not need Excel.
The engine is written and tested; the interface (the grid, the ribbon and the macro workshop) is being designed: the application is announced, not yet open.
OfficeCalc is in preparation. It will join the Prophetix subscription catalogue when it is released.
Every feature of OfficeCalc
52 features in 9 areas
Excel workbooks
- Opens and saves workbooks in XLSX and XLSM format.
- Creation of a brand-new workbook from scratch, with a first sheet.
- Saving that modifies the original file instead of rebuilding it: charts, validations, conditional formatting and pivot tables that the engine does not yet model are left intact.
- Keeps the macro project of an XLSM workbook when saving.
- Several sheets per workbook, visible or hidden sheets.
- Defined names of the workbook, global or specific to a sheet.
- Sheet size identical to Excel's: 1,048,576 rows by 16,384 columns, stored sparsely.
- Merged cells, row heights and column widths, hidden rows and columns.
Calculation and formulas
- Formulas are calculated the way Excel does, recalculating only the cells affected by a change.
- Detection of circular references: the cell concerned displays the corresponding error.
- References to ranges, to other sheets and to defined names.
- Multi-result formulas: an array spills into the neighboring cells, as with Excel's dynamic arrays.
- Excel-style error values (#DIV/0!, #N/A, #REF!, #VALUE!, etc.) and functions to test them.
- Volatile functions (TODAY, NOW, RAND) recalculated on every pass.
- INDIRECT and OFFSET correctly tracked in dependencies.
Worksheet functions
- Functions carry their English Excel names (SUM, IF, VLOOKUP), case-insensitive.
- Math: SUM, PRODUCT, SUMIF, SUMIFS, SUMPRODUCT, rounding (ROUND, MROUND, CEILING, FLOOR), powers, logarithms, trigonometry, GCD, LCM, FACT.
- Statistics: AVERAGE, MEDIAN, MODE, STDEV, VAR, PERCENTILE, LARGE, SMALL, RANK, COUNT, COUNTA, COUNTIF, COUNTIFS, AVERAGEIFS.
- Logic: IF, IFS, IFERROR, IFNA, SWITCH, AND, OR, XOR, NOT, and the tests ISNUMBER, ISTEXT, ISBLANK, ISERROR, ISNA.
- Text: CONCAT, TEXTJOIN, LEFT, RIGHT, MID, FIND, SEARCH, SUBSTITUTE, REPLACE, UPPER, LOWER, PROPER, TRIM, TEXT, VALUE, TEXTBEFORE, TEXTAFTER, TEXTSPLIT.
- Lookup: VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, XMATCH, LOOKUP, TRANSPOSE, OFFSET, INDIRECT.
- Dates: DATE, TIME, TODAY, NOW, YEAR, MONTH, DAY, WEEKDAY, DATEDIF, EDATE, EOMONTH, NETWORKDAYS, WORKDAY, WEEKNUM, YEARFRAC.
- Finance: PMT, PV, FV, NPER, RATE, IPMT, PPMT, NPV, IRR, depreciation SLN, SYD and DDB, EFFECT, NOMINAL.
- Dynamic arrays: UNIQUE, SORT, SORTBY, FILTER, SEQUENCE, RANDARRAY, TAKE, DROP, CHOOSEROWS, CHOOSECOLS, VSTACK, HSTACK, TOCOL, TOROW.
Formats and styles
- Excel-style number formats: decimals, thousands separators, scientific notation, dates, times, elapsed durations, text and conditions.
- Rendering of numbers and dates according to each cell's format code.
- Cell styles: font, size, bold, italic, strikethrough, underline, text color.
- Background fill, borders on all four sides, horizontal and vertical alignment.
- Styles read and written back in workbooks, without loss for what the engine understands.
Pivot tables
- Building a pivot table from a data range.
- Fields in rows (several levels), in columns, in values and in filters.
- Twelve summary functions: sum, count, count of numeric values, average, maximum, minimum, product, standard deviations and variances, distinct values.
- Subtotals and grand totals of rows and columns, which can be shown or hidden.
- Collapsible groups and a number format specific to each value field.
VBA macros
- Extracts the macros of an XLSM workbook and restores their source code, module by module.
- Runs VBA macros with a built-in interpreter, without Microsoft Excel installed.
- Supported language: procedures and functions, variables, constants, conditions, loops, Select Case, With, early exits, error handling.
- Common VBA functions: text, conversions, dates, arrays, MsgBox, InputBox, Format.
- Excel object model: sheets, ranges, cells, value and formula, number format, font, background color, merge, clearing, recalculation, saving.
- Access to worksheet functions from a macro, through WorksheetFunction.
- Safeguard: a macro is stopped after two million instructions rather than freezing the application.
On your devices
- Windows: application window with the Prophetix account (My space menu, sign-out, workstation release) and a license warning banner.
- Warning banner when the license is nearing its expiry, is unpaid or cannot be verified offline.
- Windows only for now: no Linux, Android or web version.
Good to know
- The application is announced but not yet open: the calculation engine, XLSX reading and writing and the VBA interpreter are written, the interface remains to be written.
- Today, the application window shows only the product name and the account: no grid, ribbon or macro workshop yet.
- A workbook's charts, conditional formatting and validations are kept when saving but are not yet modeled or editable.
- Macros are interpreted: an Excel behavior that the engine does not reproduce can make them fail or give a different result.
- An imported macro is not guaranteed to be identical to its execution in Excel.
Planned (not available yet)
- Cell entry grid, being designed.
- Command ribbon, being designed.
- Macro workshop (Macro Studio) to write and run macros, being designed.
