Family

Children's screen time and permitted applications, managed from a console for parents.

Family connects the Windows computers in the home to a web console reserved for parents. It shows live which devices are online, which application is in the foreground and how much screen time has been used today. With one gesture, you lock or unlock a device, or send it its rules again.

Rules are set per child: daily limit, permitted time slot, limit per application, blocked applications. Alerts come up in the console, and a current unlock code, displayed in plain text or as a QR code, lifts a lock.

A small Windows agent must be installed on each monitored computer, registered with a pairing code that the parents generate in the console. Family currently covers only Windows computers: no phones or tablets.

51 features in 9 areas

Live dashboard

  • Shows the family's computers and indicates which ones are online.
  • Displays the application in the foreground on each computer.
  • Displays the screen time used today, device by device.
  • Flags a locked computer.
  • Counts unread alerts, with a link to the list.
  • Updates by itself, without reloading the page.

Remote commands

  • Locks a computer with one gesture from the console.
  • Unlocks it with one gesture.
  • Sends it the rules to apply right away.
  • Displays the current unlock code, which changes every 30 seconds.
  • The unlock code is typed on the child's computer and grants extra time, without going through the console.

Screen time rules

  • Sets a daily screen time limit, in hours per day.
  • Sets a permitted time slot, with the days of the week.
  • Sets a limit per application, in minutes per day.
  • Applies a rule to a specific child or to all children, for one device or for all.
  • Enables, disables, edits or deletes each rule.
  • Blocks applications, by naming their program, with an optional reason.
  • Enables or suspends the blocking of an application without deleting it.
  • Suspends all of a child's rules with one click.

On the child's computer

  • Counts the time spent and the application in the foreground.
  • Warns the child a few minutes before time runs out, so that they can save their work.
  • Displays a lock screen when the limit is reached.
  • Accepts the current parent code to unlock.
  • Closes blocked applications or prevents them from launching.
  • Reconnects to the console by itself after an interruption, without new pairing.

Settings for each device

  • Names the device and chooses which children it is assigned to.
  • Sets how many minutes before the lock the child is warned.
  • Displays a countdown or not.
  • Chooses between a lock screen placed over the session and locking the Windows session.
  • Closes blocked applications or not at the time of the lock.
  • Customizes the message and the background color of the lock screen.
  • Removes a device from the family.

Family, children and pairing

  • Manages the family: its name, its children (first name, optional date of birth) and its parents.
  • Generates a pairing code to enter in the agent to add a computer; it can be regenerated without affecting devices already paired.
  • Displays the unlock secret as a QR code to add it to an authenticator app, or for manual entry.
  • Regenerates the unlock secret; the parents' authenticator apps then have to be reconfigured.
  • Removes a child: their rules disappear with them.

Alerts

  • Notifies when a parent code has unlocked a computer, with the number of minutes granted.
  • Notifies when a new device pairs.
  • Flags repeated wrong unlock codes and suspends attempts for a few minutes.
  • Allows an alert to be marked as read, or all of them, or only unread ones to be shown.

Access and organizations

  • Reserves the console for parents, with the Prophetix account.
  • Partitions each organization: you only see your own family.
  • Requires a license to pair a new device.
  • Accessible from the browser of a computer or a phone.

Good to know

  • Family currently covers only Windows computers: no phones or tablets.
  • A small Windows agent must be installed on each monitored computer, paired with the console's code.
  • Old pairing codes no longer work to add a device once the code is regenerated.
  • The "Ask for extra time" button on the lock screen does not yet send a request to the parents.
  • Only three alerts are produced today: new device, unlock by code, repeated wrong codes.
  • Publication of the agent in the Microsoft Store has not been done.
